MGS4: Guns of the Patriots is set in a war-torn future where huge conglomerates, including the Middle East and South America, fight for supremacy using armies of hand-picked mercenaries. Now that the MGO beta is underway, Konami has added a new map (Midtown Maelstrom) and the Sneaking Mission mode, which puts one player in the skin of Solid Snake himself vs. the Red and Blue team, collecting a set number of enemy dogtags.

If you've been wanting to give Metal Gear Online a try, but the whole of Metal Gear Solid 4 doesn't rock your boat, Konami may have the answer for you.

Online store Play-Asia has started taking pre-orders for a standalone version of Metal Gear Online, currently bundled with MGS4. The Japanese edition is priced at $20, with a release date of August 14th.

The very spare description found on the product page doesn't reveal whether any bonus material -- such as new maps -- will be included with the standalone product.
